Rumors have been swirling that Microsoft and Amazon are currently in the works of producing their own branded phones.

Digitimes reports that according to sources from the upstream supply chain, Foxconn has received orders to start producing both the Microsoft and Amazon phone.

Both these companies have taken the reverse approach to Apple, first producing tablets and now going in to phones. Although these phones may come at similar times, the reasons for releasing a phone are different.

Amazon is coming off of the huge success of the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD, which has made a huge dent in the tablet world. Not to mention it was the best-selling product on Cyber Monday. Even with these devices selling like hot cakes, Amazon is not charging very much for the tablets, and is instead making money through the content they tailor to the device. The Kindle Phone, or whatever it ends up being called, will most definitely use the same revenue model as the Fire.

Microsoft, on the other hand may be doing something similar to Google, where they’re making a pure, flagship phone meant for developers and to push their operating system. The phone they produce will most likely go under their “Surface” branding and will feature a design similar to the tablet (concept photo below).
